THE DEVASTATING STATE OF KENYA

The country, Kenya, is among those countries that are affected by corona virus. This virus know no super power country or third world countries because it is strucking everyone. Its not a rich or poor disease. Putting this into consideration, most of the countries are not in a position to fight this virus without asking for a hand from other countries Kenya being an example.

The government of kenya have taken measures and precautions which perhaps think they will help fight this pandemic. Use of sanitizers, facemasks, observing social distance, lockdown are some of the precautions taken. In regard to this situation in the country, many have turned the pandemic as their source of income. Maybe the situations force them to.

Kenyans have been crying to the government to assist them in anyway possible. STAY HOME its been an anthem but the question that kenyans pose is, stay home then where will we get the fund to sustain us? The government has launched an initiative of giving out food to those in bad situations, which is a good move but personal interest and greed leads to destruction of such projects. For instance Dr. Matiangi launched the giving out of food to people in Mukuru wa Reuben and Mukuru wa Njenga areas but it was delayed with two weeks.

People are taking every opportunity they see during this pandemic to satisfy their ambitions. Recently the country experienced a political drama from jubilee Party which is led by the President. This move made kenyans wonder whether the President together with his leaders are concerned with the health of Kenyans or political satisfaction.

Even though the government is trying its best in fighting corona, some of the things the leaders are doing are making kenyans see as if leaders are not concerned with them.

Since corona was discovered in the country it has been a rough journey for kenyans and some are becoming devastated by the situation.

BBI REPORT

The BUILDING BRIDGES INITIATIVE that was launched on 27th November at Bomas of Kenya, have raised more than enough temperatures in the country most especially in the political field. The initiative was founded by President Kenyatta together with the former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. The idea of BBI was raised after the handshake thing. Kenya’s believe that BBI is the agreement made between the two during the handshake.

The emergence of this report has made politicians rise against each other. Also during the launch of BBI, it seemed like the Deputy President was out of the picture. Also as politicians who side with him are alleging that he has been put out of the picture and his roles as the Deputy President of the country have been undermined.

President Uhuru described the initiative as a new chapter in the history of Kenya, saying the documents sets the ground for unity, political tolerance and inclusivity. The report has nine-point recommendations which include:

  1. The president will be elected by the people of Kenya and for one to be declared a president, he or she must garner at least 50 percent plus one vote in the general elections. Also get 25% of total votes cast in at least 24 counties of the country.
  2. The executive will comprise of the President, Deputy President, Prime minister and cabinet ministers.
  3. The runners up in a presidential election will automatically assume the position of the opposition leader in the country.
  4. The president will appoint the cabinet in consultation with Prime minister.
  5. The prime minister will serve as a chair of cabinet sub-committees as well as the leader of government business in parliament.
  6. The report advocates for the scrapping of the posts the Chief Administrative Secretary slots.
  7. It also recommends on the inclusive system of government.
  8. The president will be given the mandate to be the commander-in-chief of the defense forces.
  9. The deputy president will be the running mate of the president and assistant in government.

This report has led to a lot of opinions being raised both by the public and also the politicians. So as to determine whether the report will go through, the founders have called for a referendum which has been opposed in many ways. Citizens are arguing if the report came from the public recommendations and they agreed with it why it is necessary to have a referendum and yet no one is opposing it.

This has called for the rallies which are going to be held all over the country. The rallies have started and they kicked off in Mombasa where it set the pace of BBI rallies. During this rallies it have been witnessed that the leaders who are siding with the deputy president are being und4ermined. This was experienced during the first rally in Mombasa when the Tangatanga leaders were not given sits and they were also being hindered from entering the rally. Also during the Kitui rally Charity Ngilu who is the governor, ordered Moses Kuria to be escorted out of the meeting though the public were against it and he was allowed to attend. The rallies have been held in different counties that is: Mombasa, kisii, Bungoma, Kitui and recently which was held in Narok.

The report has led to the disunity of politicians even those who are in the same political party. It has not yet been determined whether the referendum is going to be held or not. Also no one is aware of where the BBI saga is driving Kenya. This has been the talk in the country putting in regard there are issues affecting the country more seriously.

CS MAGOHA TO SOLVE NAIROBI UNIVERSITY LEADERSHIP CRISIS WITHIN 30 DAYS.

The University of Nairobi has been facing leadership challenges after the education Cs George Magoha dissolved the leading council of the university. He said that the vice chancellor elections were not done democratically. Due to this the university has been in a confusion state since there is no leader in the school. This has attracted the attention of the court where Justice Maureen Onyango gave 30 days to the Cs to resolve the UoN leadership crisis.

The judge said that the parties were free to negotiate on who will take over as the university head. Education Cs had revoked the appointment of Stephen Kiama pending further consultation. Kiama had been appointed as UoN VC by the institutions council which has been dissolved. Kiama is facing opposition from Prof Isaac Mbeche who was appointed by the Cs as the acting VC.

Magoha claimed that he was not consulted in the appointment of Kiama’s that’s why he dissolved the council. His decision created factions at the university with one in support and another against it. Kiama served before as the deputy VC in charge of Human Resource.

This crisis has caused some of the operation in the university to halt. The Cs is expected to resolve the issue within 30 days which he requested to be given so as he can do adequate consultation and make a favorable decision which will not bring in quarrels and fights. Students in the school have been complaining since they are not aware to whom they should run to for their assistance if required.

Since the appointment of Prof Magoha, he has proved of being able to handle the sector of education. It is the hope of many that he will be able to solve the leadership crisis in the school.

KIAMBU GOVERNOR IMPEACHMENT

Kiambu County is one of the counties that is facing leadership crisis. The crisis started when misunderstandings arose between the governor, Ferdinand Waititu and his deputy, James Nyoro. The deputy governor accused Waititu for not engaging him in the decision making of the county. This led to rise of different views both to the MCAs and the citizens of Kiambu.

Apart from misunderstandings among the two leaders, the governor was later charged with misuse of the office and graft cases. Ferdinand was arrested by the police following the orders of EACC, at his home Runda on May 23 2019. The governor was questioned by the EACC over his property acquisitions, including that of a building located within Nairobi’s central business district. The investigations included some county officers and even the family members.

Due to this, the county assembly wanted to impeach the governor but it was not successful. The MCAs to a step of registering the interests of people of Kiambu but it was dismissed by the judge, Justice Onyiego. Waititu has been fighting his impeachment.

Waititu was given a chance by the senate to prove he is not guilty. He pleaded with the senators to do to him what they would like to be done to them but his plea fell on deaf ears where the senate voted for his impeachment yesterday. 27 senators voted for Waititu to be impeached and 12 voted against. The same pattern was repeated on the third count of gross misconduct.

Waititu was not satisfied with this decision by the senators and he sued the senate, Kiambu county assembly, speakers of the two houses as well as his deputy governor. He claimed that his impeachment by kiambu assembly was passed by 57 members which are below the required threshold of 62. He wants the swearing of his deputy to be halted and implementation of the senate resolution suspended. The swearing in of James Nyoro has been gazette by Lusaka.

The court decision is awaited so as the next step can be carried on. The county has been facing this leadership wrangles like the Nairobi county.

POLITICS IN NAIROBI COUNTY

Nairobi city is among the 47 counties in Kenya established under the 2010 constitution. The copun5ty operates under the County Government Act. The responsibilities of this county have been divided into two arms;

  • The county assembly led by the speaker
  • The executive arm led by the governor

These two arms are responsible for every function in the county. The county Assembly has all the powers to make laws that will govern the county and it is composed of the MCAs and an executive committee appointed by the governor.

The Nairobi County Assembly has turned to be a fighting field for the politicians in the county. Politics in this county have taken their level best and replaced all other activities in the county. Politics have defined some of the politicians as being clownish and political wags due to their style of handling issues. When Nairobi is mentioned in terms of politics, there are specific individuals who pop up in the minds of the citizens, the likes of Mike Sonko and Babu Owino. They are good examples of people who have taken up the Nairobi politics.

Recently Babu Owino was charged with attempted murder and was released with a cash bail of 10M. The Embakasi East M.P has been known to be a master in politics since when he was a chair of student council at Nairobi University. Also he was the founder of the slogan ‘Tibim Tialala’ which was famously used by the ODM politicians during the 2017 elections.

So far the county has been ruled by two governors, Evans Kidero the first governor and Mike Mbuvi Sonko the current governor. Since the reign of Sonko the county has been experiencing a lot of wrangles in the County Assembly and it has turned to be a boiling pot for many politicians. We have seen the MCAs throwing tables and chairs to each other during a seating. There have been issues that have raised the political temperatures in the county. Some are like:

  • Impeachment of the County Assembly speaker- Beatrice Elachi
  • Lack of a Deputy governor
  • Barring the governor from the office

During the 2017 elections, Sonko appointed Polycap Igathe as his deputy and was willing to work with him. Polycap only served for four months then he wrote a resignation letter to the governor on. He claimed that the reason for him to resign is that he was not able to earn the trust of the governor. The governor’s office claimed that it wasn’t aware of Polycap’s move and they got to know about it through the media. After the resignation of deputy governor it was expected of the governor to appoint a deputy but Sonko didn’t do that even after being ordered by the court.

Polycap Igathe together with Sonko

Sonko claimed that the resignation of Polycap was driven by two or three people who had an interest in his governance. During an interview with Kameme, he said that those behind the resignation act will be delt with politically. He also stated that he only receives orders from the president and his deputy thus he is not entertain anyone views on appointing a Deputy Governor. The issue of appointing a Deputy Governor was put at rest until the end of last year when Sonko was arrested.

Sonko was arrested on early December 2019 with charges on graft and misuse of the office. Due to his arrest, the deputy governor was supposed to take the office but in Nairobi county things are different. Wycliffe Oparanya, the chair of the council of governors, addressed the leadership crisis in the county. He said that the council is looking into the appointment of a deputy governor who will take the office in the absence of the governor. This was after the court made a ruling that Sonko should not access the office till his case has been sorted out.

According to the constitution the County Assembly speaker will take over the office for 60 days. This has as well faced opposition from some MCAs who are claiming that the speaker can only take governor’s office if he is dead or has been declared bankrupt. The law seems to be unclear in circumstances facing Nairobi where there is no Deputy Governor and the governor himself has been barred from the office. Sonko has also challenged the possibility of having the County Assembly speaker Beatrice Elachi assume function of the governor office through his lawyer Harrison Kinyajui who filled a certificate of urgency.

Sonko has been playing cat and mouse game in the issue of electing deputy governor. After he was barred from the office, he nominated Anne Mwenda as a Deputy Governor and urged the County Assembly to vet her. This move was dismissed by Noordin Haji, the DPP, said that Sonko was against the hail terms which barred him from executing his duty as the governor. Currently the County is under the leadership of county assembly speaker, Beatrice Elachi, who also survived the impeachment by the MCAs.

On September 6 a motion was presented in the county assembly to impeach the speaker. This led to chaos in city hall as those who supported the motion and those against it were fighting each other. Those who wanted to impeach Elachi claimed that they had a report served to Elachi not to operate as the county speaker. Elachi has been away from the assembly and from her duties as a speaker for almost a year. The court reinstated that she go back to the city hall but still the court decision was challenged by Hassan Guyo who wanted her out of the assembly. Elachi has been reinforced by the court the powers of the speaker of County Assembly of Nairobi.

The Nairobi County is now on the hands of Beatrice Elachi the speaker and Leboo who is the acting secretary of City Hall in absence of Sonko. The county has been in a tense mood in terms of leadership. Some county leaders want the president to dissolve the county leadership so as to end the crisis in leadership.

IMMORARITY AND MODERNISM.

Immorality is the violation of moral laws, norms or standards. Immorality is normally applied to people or actions. In the early times morals were used to be observed. People use to behave accordingly to what was required from them. In the modern ways morals are not observed like before.

People do not put into considerations what other people view about them. Cases of immorality have been prominent in our society today. We have heard or even seen the immoral behaviors around us. The modern world has embraced immorality with a defense of “changing with technology”.
Technology has been the main cause of immoral behaviors and also the westernization. The people who are mostly affected are the young generation. They have done away with their cultures and have adopted the western culture; they have been addicted to the internet thus copying what they see there.

According to Michael Foucault, the modern world was unable to put forward a coherent morality. Nevertheless modernism has been accompanied by a cult of immorality. Judging with Foucault perception, the modern world has introduced a lot of things which were not there before and they have carried immorality in them.
Some of these things which were not there are like, tattooing, premarital sex, homosexuality, incest, fornication and many more. We have heard of many instances where people are caught in tis situations. Lately there were a group of people who had gone to court in order to legalize the homosexuality thing in the country but they were not successful.

This is one way of showing how people are corrupt in their minds. Even God Himself has not allowed that and it is against His laws. Modernity has also led people to disvalue the existence of God. We have seen people who have come together to proclaim that there is no God, known as the Atheist.

Premarital sex and early pregnancies have increased in the modern era. Modernity has brought a lot with it. Cases of ladies dating older men and vice versa, known as “sponsors”, incest, fornication and many more. The use of technology has made young people to adapt what they see and they decide not to listen to what they are told by their seniors who now better than them.

Modernity is not bad but what it brings forth is bad. People should embrace modernity with a positive perspective. Also we should try not to embrace everything that we see or hear. We should encourage things that are of good to us and those they will bring a good picture and respectable one in the society. We should always protect our dignity and morals.

POLICE DURING THE DAY AND CRIMINALS DURING THE NIGHT.

Three police officers and one Cameroon citizen were arrested after being accused of robbing one business person KSH6M. The three officers, Alex Kainde, Wilson cheruyoit and Daniel Kipkoror are from Kayole police station. The three were arrested on Wednesday 22 2020, after the victim, Ahmed Osman reported the case to the police station. The three police officers were aligned in the Pangani court as investigations go on.

The incident happened days after the president addressed the issue of police officers being involved in crimes. These are not the first officers to be held with such cases in the country. There have been many who have even involved themselves in murder.

Statistics state that there are 62 cases of police officers being linked to crime every month and two cases every day. The Inspector General of police, Hillary Mutyambai, failed to resolve the issues of police being involved in crime on April last year when he had called a meeting after he was appointed.

At the time, police officers from the DCI offices in Parklands were arrested at a roadblock manned by police officers in kitengela on suspicion that they were escorting contraband ethanol. The incidents range from officers seeking the Sh50 bribes at roadblocks to more complex cases.

The police spokesman, Charles Owino, said that all is not well in the police department. He said lack of proper supervision of junior officers by the senior officers has led to increase of these cases. He said that dealing with the problem is by firing those involved in crime. Police commanders have been instructed to closely supervise the juniors.

According to a research done in 2015 it showed that policemen were mostly involved in drug trafficking, criminal damage and economic crimes. In the last two months, the country witnessed cases of police involved in organizing crimes such as the Shs72 million Nairobi bank heist.

This cases are more evident to show that police officers are only officers during the day but during the night thy turn to be criminals. Although the interior ministry has allocated a lot of budget to the police sector in order to fight the crimes, it seems that they will go back to the drawing board to allocate more funds since crimes are increasing now and then including those who are supposed to fight the crimes are now becoming the stakeholders of crimes.
How will this be curbed if even the investigative body in the country has been involved in such cases? It is a high time that the ministry of interior security take the case of fighting the crimes in the country. The ministry should up its game and most especially in the department of the police.
The president has tried to give his best in minimizing the levels of crime in the country but without the help of the police he has not yet been successful accordingly. Those who are supposed to join hands with him have turned to be victims.

Police officers are like other citizens and should be treated the same. However if they will be the ones on the front line to support social crimes, how will the society supposed to accept them?

ACCIDENT’S.

Accidents have increased with a higher percentage in our country today. Most especially, during the festive seasons accidents hype up. The government have tried to put regulations in order to try and minimize the accidents with the help of NTSA, the body responsible for transport and safety in the country.

Even though the government has tried its best and played its part, the responsibility lies to the publics and the drivers. Every person is entitled to safety thus its our duty to ensure we are safe. Looking at the previous statistics there were more than 2000 people who died due to road accidents in year 2019.
The government had tried to put strict restrictions but it was only for a short period of rime. After the government eased its regulations, things were back to normal and drivers stopped considering the road rules.

Safety starts with you and I. We should stop blaming the drivers for the road mistakes observed. After you board a vehicle its your responsibility to have your safety belt on but not the driver’s. Also if the driver over speed you should be the one to complain. We should not let the drivers put our lives in danger rather its better to talk or you will be dead or a crippled.

Although the government has tried its best, corruption in our roads have not yet been curbed. Some traffic police officers still accept the bribes from drivers who have been found with mistakes. Instead of the police taking a lawful action to the driver, they decide to take the bribe.

Accidents will never cease due to such incidents because if no action is taken to the driver found with a mistake. No one is above the law and legal actions should be taken to police who accepts the bribe and those found against the law in the roads. If there are people who have been thorough punished for disobeying the road rules, maybe it will serve as an example to others.
For example.. Yesterday twenty one people were injured in a grisly road accidents involving Kenya Mpya bus. The bus rammed head-on with a canter lorry transporting bricks. According to an eye witness, the lorry was driving at a high speed, the bus driver was trying to avoid it but he failed due to the service lane road curb.

some of the causes of accidents include:

  1. Distracted driving
  2. Drunk driving
  3. Speeding
  4. Reckless driving
  5. Improper turns
  6. Pot holes
Those are some of the factors that contribute to accident. Therefore drivers should tak care of such things inorder to minimize accidents. Also those responsible in regulating the roads policies, should always follow the rule of law. The government should be strict in their operations. We alsoshould take an initiative to ensure that no more lives are lost in our roads.
